Pedra de Lume
Being the oldest village on Sal where back in the 18thcentury the salt mines used to supply salt to Africa, all that remains now is the saltpans set in a deep volcanic crater providing a mosaic of pink, blue and green lakes. After exploring the remains of the mining village a tunnel may be walked through to enter the crater to view the beauty of the lakes.
A hive of activity throughout the day where locals sell their hand crafted wares and fresh fish is landed daily at the jetty, which may be enjoyed at a vast array of restaurants and bars alongside live guitarists strumming Cape Verdean classics. Santa Maria, Portuguese for Saint Mary, was a former salt working village and is now the tourism centre of the Island.
